Virginians for Reconciliation, Inc. (VFR) is a volunteer group and a registered 501(C)(3) organization. Formed in 2018, VFR aims to address the legacy of slavery and issues of racism by building trust and implementing concrete actions. Our founders united leaders from diverse backgrounds to confront American history and promote cooperation and problem-solving across races.

Despite progress since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, ongoing divisions prompted this coalition to publicly launch in 2019, marking 400 years since the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in America. Reflecting on Virginia’s role in slavery, we determined that now is the time for frank conversations among all people of goodwill.

Acknowledging existing efforts to heal and reconcile, VFR joined forces with urgency to foster a culture of repentance, reconciliation, and cooperation. We believe that raising awareness of racial reconciliation is critical for building a harmonious and inclusive society for future generations.

The Declaration of Independence acknowledges that all people have inalienable rights endowed by our Creator and the U.S. Constitution guarantees equal protection under the law, with equal opportunity for each person to live the American dream. The Scriptures affirm that all persons are created in the image and likeness of God. These truths should be reflected in the economic, political, and social life of our nation, yet they are not fully experienced by all citizens.

The Constitution calls us to work continually to form a “more perfect union.” In 2019, Virginians have a unique opportunity to initiate honest dialogue and accelerate the healing of racial wounds. We believe we must motivate all citizens toward civility and reconciliation in every aspect of daily life.

Virginia was the arrival point for the first enslaved Africans in August 1619 and later became the epicenter of the American slave trade and the capital of the Confederacy. The struggle for freedom and equality continued through the bravery of leaders like Dred Scott, Barbara Johns, Oliver Hill, Maggie Walker, and Doug Wilder.

Virginia has a history of civil rights victories, including combating black codes, Jim Crow laws, school segregation, and laws prohibiting interracial unions. Yet, more work is needed to fulfill Dr. King’s dream and secure equality for all.

Today, Virginia can and must lead the nation on the path of truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation.

Virginians for Reconciliation believes that true change starts with transforming the human heart to embrace the golden rule of loving one's neighbor. When hearts change, so do cultures, laws, and attitudes. To support this, VFR has developed comprehensive plans and programs for all citizens.

We are organizing events across the state to help Virginians confront the persistent truths about race in America. These events aim to foster new conversations and frameworks where people of different races, political parties, backgrounds, and heritages can engage in honest and healthy dialogue. By breaking down stereotypes and barriers, we encourage collaboration for the common good without seeking personal credit.

As we build trust and understanding, our united community will be empowered to overhaul systems and practices that have restricted liberty for all.

Virginians for Reconciliation is a coalition of leaders and influencers from key sectors such as education, government, business, faith, and the arts. We welcome individuals who are eager to contribute their expertise, talents, or passion to our mission. Our community believes that entrenched habits and mindsets can be changed through determined commitments and the power of love and unity.

We invite Virginians from all walks of life and backgrounds to join us in making 2019 and beyond a period of honesty, racial reconciliation, and healing. Together, we strive to create a more just, civil, and respectful society for today, tomorrow, and future generations.
