Present

A DISCUSSION ON TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

A Forum Moderated by Dr. Ted Ritter, VUU

In 1857, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Dred Scott, an enslaved Virginian, was not an American citizen under the U.S. Constitution. This tragic legal decision, written by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney shortly before the Civil War, set off a chain of historic events that led to the passage of three Constitutional Amendments. Mr. Scott died a year and a half after receiving his freedom.

Come hear the story of this unusual journey from truth and accountability to humility and reconciliation, as Mrs. Lynne M. Jackson of St. Louis, Missouri, the great-great-granddaughter of Mr. Dred Scott joins Mr. Charles Taney, a direct descendant of Chief Justice Taney, to describe the paths they chose to walk together.

You are cordially invited to attend this discussion on the hard truths of slavery and its aftermath, and what it takes today for healing and reconciliation. This event will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at the Claude G. Perkins Living and Learning Center on the campus of Virginia Union University. The event is open to the public. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and there is no charge for admission.
